MARKETING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CURRY COUNTY CLUSTER STUDY
Area business leaders participated in a study to help identify industries Curry County can target for economic development. The New Mexico Economic Development Department, which funded the study, selected Curry County as one of two counties for the cluster study. The other county is Rio Arriba, located in North Central New Mexico.
The study, “Enhancing Curry County’s Competitive Advantages in the New Economy,” is complete and copies are now available at the Chamber. In summary, the study concluded that Curry County has a potential or developed competitive advantage in the following areas:
- Major Externally-Funded Clusters: Cannon Air Force Base, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad
- Locally Based Clusters: Value-Added Agriculture; Metalworking, Machinery and Related Industries
- Emerging Clusters: Information Age and Technolgy through Telecommunications; Biotechnology
The study indicated that:
“Curry County can and should have plans and policies for each of these clusters. Some clusters will involve recruiting; some retention programs and some will require further investigation and monitoring. Curry County, in its quest to better the local economy, must focus on identifying areas in which a competitive advantage exists or can be developed. Local economic clusters can increase their competitiveness by recognizing the importance of innovation and applying new technology.”
See you next month!
