Balloon Fiesta October 7-15, 2000
The most photographed event in the world, the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has been an Albuquerque tradition since 1972, when 13 balloons ascended the skies over Albuquerque. The Fiesta celebrates the joys of hot air ballooning, and has also introduced many fans to the excitement of gas balloon races.
Each year, this massive, international event is organized by a full-time paid staff of less than 10 people, an all-volunteer board of 24 members, and thousands of volunteers working every facet of the event.
In 2000, the Balloon Fiesta will host entries from more than 28 countries, boasting more than 900 balloons and 1200 balloonists.
October 7 will see the launch of the Fifth America's Challenge Gas Balloon Race. A GPS tracker system will be installed in 25 of the 27 participating balloons, allowing for accurate distance tracking of the racers, carried live on the internet.
The ideal time for hot air balloons to fly is typically in the morning, when lower winds and cooler temperatures provide a better environment for flying. To launch and land safely, winds need to be under ten miles per hour.
So be sure to get there before sunrise, so that you can get a glimpse of these graceful giants in all their glory, as they rise skyward in the early New Mexico dawn!
