Election 2000 Opinions

Posted November 10, 2000

Last Update: November 27, 2000

The extraordinary results of the November 7, 2000 election are still unclear; America does not know who her next President will be: George Bush or Al Gore. Miscounted ballots are being recounted, and while the world waits, the electoral vote totals and popular vote totals are in Al Gore's favor (262 electoral votes for Al Gore versus 246 for George Bush; popular vote totals of 49,169,581 for Gore and 48,967,163 for Bush as of 5:10PM Friday, November 10).

Absentee ballots in Florida will be received and counted by midnight Friday, November 17. The Republican Party is considering challenging vote counts here in New Mexico, as well as in Oregon and Wisconsin.

Our household feels very strongly that every opportunity to assure that the election process was done fairly needs to be pursued.

Never did we believe that this would happen in our "lifetime" and we are watching with great interest as to the outcome as well as the fallout. Things will have to change!

Hopefully on the side of accuracy and will will let our great nation proceed to show the world how we can settle our affairs with great dignity and discipline.

Thank you for this opportunity to express our opinion on such a rare event.

Sincerely,

To the Editor:

As an American voter who respects our democratic system, I feel that George W. Bush is morally bound to call for a re-vote in the places in Florida where confusing ballots made voting difficult. Any person who would lead America as President and says "I trust the people" should be happy to allow concerned citizens to vote their minds. Someone who says he wants to "restore honor and dignity to the White House" should not allow himself to come to power in such a questionable and possibly illegitimate way.

Al Gore won the popular vote, and without the irregularities in Florida, quite possibly the Florida vote; George Bush should acknowledge that every step should be taken to ensure the true will of the American people is heard. Otherwise there will be millions of people in this country who will feel his presidency has no legitimacy.

Sincerely,
